Lechmere Library

East Cambridge, MA

This library project explores the spatial possibilities embedded in the graphic, typewriter plans of Archizoom’s No Stop City. The drawings are translated into the building by filling the site with a field of columns. A homogenous, democratic space, stitches together the communities of the historic residential neighborhood along Cambridge Street and the quickly gentrifying, industrially scaled neighborhood along Monsignor O’Brien Highway. On the ground level, the furniture field is expansive and open, welcoming to all. To keep the ground floor open, the book stacks are raised on platforms that float above the ground and suggest the arrangement of furniture and program below.
